About The Hackathon

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest, datathon or codefest; a portmanteau of hacking and marathon) is an event where people engage in rapid and collaborative engineering over a relatively short period of time such as 24 or 48 hours.

The Circular Economy Hackathon brings together innovators, developers, enviropreneurs and thought leaders to identify problems, find solutions and build technological products.

The Hackathon will focus on the green economy, owing to the need to creating an enabling platform for enviropreneurs and innovating solutions for the Circular Economy sector. As a build up to the hackathon, masterclass and worksprint sessions will be hosted to help participants prepare, with guidance from industry and thought leaders.

The purpose of the Circular Economy Hackathon is to Create a pipeline of youth entrepreneurs that can actively contribute to South Africa’s green economy.

The iMvelisi Project Implementation partners invite students, graduates, young professionals, enviropreneurs, developers (Software And Hardware), data scientists, designers, business/systems analysts, impact Investors, environmentalists, social Innovators, ICT experts, academics, policy makers, social activists and end-users to take part at the hackathon.

A circular economy (also referred to as circularity or CE) is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible. CE aims to tackle global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution by emphasizing the design-based implementation of the three base principles of the model.
